Ein Manta namens Sheena/A manta called sheena

Es war mein 14. Tauchgang während meines AOWD Kurses im Dez. 2000 als ich meine ersten 2 Mantas sah. Seither faszinieren mich diese Tiere und jede Begegnung mit ihnen ist etwas besonderes. Über die Jahre hatte ich das Glück immer wieder mit diesen Tieren tauchen zu dürfen.

Als ich vor ein paar Jahren in Thailand bei einem Vortrag der amerikanischen Marine-Biologin Andrea Marshall zu Gast war (bekannt aus der BBC Doku “Andrea – Queen of the Mantas”), erfuhr ich mehr über das Manta Identifizierung Projekt mantamatcher.org . Mit der Hilfe einer Software und auch viel Handarbeit können die verschiedenen Tiere mit Fotos Ihrer Unterseite Identifiziert werden, so ähnlich wie ein Fingerabdruck.

Seither habe ich in Thailand und Indonesien schon dutzende ID Fotos gemacht oder von Gästen gesammelt und zu dem Projekt beigetragen.

Natürlich führe ich diese “Hobby” auch hier auf den Malediven weiter. Gleich bei meiner Ankunft im November hatte ich das Glück noch auf ein paar Mantas hier bei Medhufushi bei Mantas and more / Boahura express zu treffen. Diese sind nun aber weiter nach Süden im Atoll gezogen und wir können sie momentan fast wöchentlich mit der MY Sheena im “Valley of the ray” auf unserem Tauchsafaris besuchen. Das ich nun schon einige Bilder für das Projekt gesammelt habe und wir bestimmt schon mindestens 10 Tiere identifizieren und vor allem auch wieder erkennen konnten bekam ich die Ehre eines davon zu taufen. Es handelt sich um ein Weibchen, sie wurde das erste mal 2013 fotografiert und heisst jetzt Sheena.

It was my 14th dive during my AOWD course in der 2000 when i saw my fist 2 manta rays. Since then i am fascinated by these animals every encounter with them is something special. Over the years i was lucky to dive with these animals many times.ded a presentation of the american marine biologist Andrea Marshal in Thailand, known from BBC documentary “Andrea – Queen of the mantas”. There I’ve learned more about the Manta Id Project manta matcher.org .With the help of a software and also a lot of “manual” work they can identify the animals from pictures of their belly, similar to a fingerprint.

Since then i have contributed lots of pictures from mantas in Thailand and Indonesia by taken them myself or collecting from guests.

Of course i do continue my hobby here in the Maldives. Already just after my arrival i was lucky to encounter some mantas here near Medhufushi on Mantas and more / Boahura express. But now they have moved to the southern end of the atoll and we get to visit them almost weekly in the “valley of the ray” on our liveaboard MY Sheena. Because i have collected several pictures for the project and we could identify about 10 animals already i was honoured the name one of the mantas. She is a female, a first foto was taken of hear 2013 and she is called now Sheena.
